CIRCOMOD Takes Stock of Progress in Lisbon

Circomod recently concluded its annual meeting hosted by the NOVA University of Lisbon. From February 26th to 28th, the Circomod team gathered to reflect on their achievements and strategise for the future.

The meeting served as a testament to the project’s growth and impact since its inception. Attendees were greeted with warm Portuguese hospitality, courtesy of the NOVA University, setting the stage for productive discussions and exchanges.

The project has just reached a significant milestone by delivering the mid-term reviews and related assessments. Positive feedback from these evaluations buoyed the team’s enthusiasm and reinforced their commitment to advancing the goals of Circomod.

Central to the discussions was the integration of various models developed within Circomod. Teams dedicated to specific model families came together to explore synergies such as e.g. in connecting industrial ecology models with economic and integrated assessment models. This collaborative effort aims to enhance understanding of the circular economy’s potential impact on climate and society.

Furthermore, participants delved into the discussion about development of circular economy scenarios tailored to meet the needs of policymakers at both the European Union and United Nations levels. Leveraging the work done thus far within the project, these scenarios will provide valuable insights for informed decision-making.

The meeting also addressed the creation of Circular Economy Profiles of products, materials, sectors, and countries. Drawing from the extensive database built by Circomod, these profiles will offer comprehensive analyses to guide sustainable practices and policies. Additionally, discussions encompassed a survey on behavioral plasticity exploring consumer attitudes and preferences crucial for driving transition to circular economy.

A significant highlight of the gathering was the joint session with CO2nstruct, a sister project, that focused on sustainability in the building sector. While meeting for the first time, both teams have identified numerous opportunities for collaboration, highlighting the potential for cross-disciplinary insights and solutions.

As the meeting drew to a close, participants outlined a series of next steps aimed at enhancing efficiency and coherence within the Circomod team, as well as strengthening collaborations with external partners. Armed with renewed vigor and a clear roadmap, Circomod continues to pave the way for a more sustainable and circular future.
